Last winter here in the Fairbanks, Alaska area, there were many Honda hybrids that shut down on our customers under dangerous conditions. These issues have been noted mainly in newer models, and, to our knowledge, Honda has not thoroughly addressed them. As such, we are encouraging our customers to take action before winter sets in again. Let’s quickly cover two actions you can take now to combat the Honda hybrid cold-weather shutdown issue.

1. Report a Safety Issue with the National Highway Transportation Board

We are encouraging our customers to press Honda of America to address one to three of the known areas causing the cold-weather problems. They are listed in the next section below. If you experienced a shutdown or other cold-weather-related issue with your Honda hybrid last winter, and Honda has not fully addressed the issue with you, we recommend reporting it on the NHTSA’s website.

2. Check for Recalls

Some official recalls have been issued recently. These recalls are related to Honda hybrid vehicles in cold temperatures, particularly involving issues with the software controlling the powertrain and the performance of the hybrid systems in low temperatures.

These recalls often involve:

1. Battery Sensor Failures: Some Honda hybrids have experienced issues where cold temperatures cause the battery sensor to malfunction, leading to false warnings or failures in starting the vehicle. These sensors are crucial for hybrid operation and, when compromised, can impact overall vehicle reliability.
2. Software Updates: Certain Honda hybrid models have required software updates to address powertrain performance issues during cold weather. The cold can affect the calibration of hybrid systems, leading to reduced performance or improper power management between the electric and gasoline engines.
3. Hybrid System Shutdowns: There have been instances where Honda hybrid systems would unexpectedly shut down in freezing temperatures. This is typically due to miscommunication between the battery management system and the engine control unit, often requiring both a software fix and sometimes hardware replacements.

How to Check for Honda Hybrid Recalls

If you have experienced any of these issues or if you own a newer Honda Hybrid model (made in 2021 or after), we recommend that you first check for any open recalls by reviewing Honda’s official recall database.

To access Honda of America’s recall database and check for any recalls related to your vehicle,

follow these steps:

1. Visit the official Official Honda Recall Lookup Website.
2. Enter your vehicle information
   – Input your vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). This 17-character number can be found on the driver’s side dashboard or on the door frame.
3. View the recall information
   – Once you enter the VIN, the system will display any active recalls or safety issues related to your specific vehicle, including hybrid cars.
4. Contact your local Honda dealer
   – If your Honda vehicle is affected by a recall, Honda will provide instructions on how to schedule a service appointment at an authorized dealer, where the necessary repairs or updates will be carried out free of charge.
   – We recommend engaging in this process very soon, as dealerships have limited availability for these tasks, and there may be a waiting list. Winter is just around the corner, so don’t delay!
